My Passion for Writing

My love of reading and writing are entwined. As much as I love reading stories, visiting other worlds and peoples’ lives in my head; I also love conjuring up ideas and stories of my own. Ever since I can remember, I have always loved writing. From the time I learnt to write, I always had diaries and notebooks where I would write my thoughts and stories.

I am part of the Harry Potter generation (Gryffindor) and when I was waiting impatiently for the next sequel to be released – I can’t remember which one it was now – I began writing my own version of how the sequel would go. Don’t get me wrong, it was not a patch on the Queen’s, but it nourished my own passion for writing.

There is nothing quite like that feeling when you finish such an amazing book; a story which has somehow touched you, moved you beyond words. You find yourself sitting there, processing what you have just read, feeling the loss that you will never get to read it for the first time again. I absolutely love it when I read a book which completely knocks my socks off; makes me cry my heart out or makes me truly think.

As an introvert, I’m not really one for public speaking or for striking up passionate conversations with groups of strangers. I do however, have opinions and stories and thoughts that I want to share with the world. This is something I try to do through writing, even if only one person reads something I have written, it still means the world to me. Words are amazing, words are powerful and there is nothing more beautiful to me than the way words can touch people.

I have found when reading certain books, that I have connected so much with a character or the way the author has written. Reading and writing has the power to make you feel so completely connected with strangers, not only the author but also all of the other readers of any given book. I think in some ways books and words are underestimated in their ability to unite people.

When I write; whether it’s sharing my experiences, my thoughts or a story I have imagined, I love the thought that somebody might connect with what I have written. That somebody might relate and understand what I am communicating between the lines. I hope that in some way, anything I write might reach out to someone, might comfort them in some small way or reassure them that they are not alone. I pray that one day I will fulfil my childhood dream of having a book published, God willing, and if I do I hope it would mean something to somebody.

As a writer, you go looking for those ugly, raw and passionate emotions. Not only that but you poke and prod and you see what comes out. Those emotions that most people might prefer to keep trapped in a box deep in their minds, never to be acknowledged or investigated. Those emotions are what, in my humble opinion, can make the most beautiful writing and the most captivating stories. Showing the ugliest and the most beautiful sides of humanity.

To those that have been reading my ramblings, my thoughts and my stories, thank you so much it truly does mean the world.

Much love, Safiya X
